Overlook Medical Center’s History and Mission
Overlook Medical Center (OMC) is a 501c3 non-profit, regional medical center and a teaching hospital, as well as a member of Atlantic Health System, a nonprofit health system located in Summit, New Jersey.
Background on Atlantic Neuroscience Institute
At the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, the goal is to provide the full range of the highest quality neurology and neurosurgery services to all patients at Overlook, Morristown, Newton and Chilton Medical Centers. With Joint Commission recognized centers of excellence in stroke at all four campuses, and in spine care at Overlook and Morristown, they share best practices system-wide to assure consistent, outstanding neuroscience care.
Overlook is now one of only about 100 hospitals nationwide recognized by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Overlook and Morristown Medical Centers are both ranked Best Regional Hospitals in Neurology & Neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report. Overlook Medical Center is recognized by consumer healthcare ratings group Healthgrades® as the only hospital in New Jersey to be named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care®, Critical Care®, and General Surgery® in 2017.
For more than 10 years, the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute has been serving Northern New Jersey as the region’s leader in stroke care. Atlantic Neuroscience Institute’s stroke centers are nationally recognized and connect more than 15 Primary Stroke Center hospitals in Northwestern New Jersey. The Atlantic Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Hospital serves as the hub for the NJ Stroke Network – the largest group of its kind in the state comprised of New Jersey’s Primary Stroke Center hospitals – and serves approximately 40 percent of the state’s stroke patients.
The InTouch RP Lite
This telehealth technology, which the Foundation grant will help to fund, is both equipment and IT telecommunications services which provide a direct communication pathway between the patient and the physician for a real-time video and dialogue exchange which saves invaluable time in the patient’s medical assessment. Based on current demographics, the Institute estimates that approximately half of the beneficiaries of this technology will be persons in need.
The InTouch RP Lite is a convenient, cost-effective movable platform which:
- Optimizes viewing of patients and others in the room with its pan-tilt-zoom camera system;
- Improves communication clarity with its directional audio modes;
- Improves “hands-on” functions with a stethoscope, a privacy headset, and ports that permit connection to other diagnostic tools.
