On October 18th, NJ SIM Foundation kicked-off our STEM IT Career Awareness program for the 2019-2020 school year with 57 bright-eyed bushy-tailed 5th graders at the Dionne Warwick Institute, E.Orange. SIM NJ volunteers not only encouraged these youngsters to explore a career in IT by briefly sharing their career journey, they also pumped up the energy during the students’ Paper Tower Challenge. In all three sessions, teams of three had ten minutes to leverage their technical and non-technical skills in building the highest free standing tower out of a sheet of paper, 12” of masking tape, and a pair of scissors. The winning team’s tower stood 26” high! These students experienced how amazingly fun it was to use many of the same skills required of an IT career during their high energy challenge. Thank you to Prem Alexander, Jepthaw Scipio, and Yee Jao for taking the time to share with our youngest students.
