DESCRIPTION:The Persistent Threat of Foreign Influence\nFor our first meeting of the year\, we welcome Kyle Brownlie\, Analyst\, FBI. The talk will cover the persistent threat of foreign influence in the United States and the myriad ways the modern information and media environment has transformed traditional propaganda techniques. We will clarify the distinctions between malign foreign influence and legitimate persuasive activities\, consider some reasons why foreign powers have come to favor this kind of operation\, and discuss the actual mechanics of how foreign governments run these campaigns using real world examples. We will conclude with an overview of the steps both the FBI and the rest of the US government more broadly are taking to mitigate the threat\, including a discussion of steps you can take to protect yourself from malign foreign influence both personally and professionally. \nAbout the Speaker:\nKyle Brownlie is Staff Operations Specialist with the Intelligence Branch of the FBI’s Newark field office\, where he has more than five years of experience working counterintelligence matters.
