SIM Digirisk: “Navigating the disinformation landscape, Part 2”

June 12 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

About the Session:
In an era where information spreads rapidly across digital platforms, the need for dynamic leadership in digital risk is more important than ever in combatting disinformation.

Join the Digirisk SIG in a 2-part webcast series. At the May webcast, Digirisk co-leads will be joined by Chris Feola and Dr. Matthew Jennings to explore:

  • Understanding the threats and consequences
  • Spotting disinformation

In June, Chris Feola returns and will be joined by Dr. Keri Pearlson to continue the discussion on:

  • Professional and social responsibilities of Digital Risk Leaders
  • Tips for safeguarding the information ecosystem.

Our objective with the series is to equip you with actionable insights to protect against disinformation, to foster a resilient and informed society.

About the Speakers:

Christopher J Feola’s unfinished autobiography is entitled Things I did While Planning to do Completely Different Things. He has accidentally or serendipitously been Banned from the Pacific Rim, taught at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism before receiving his B.S., and just this year been granted a fifth patent in data architecture, none of which made good use – any use, really – of his major in Theatre or his minor in Modern Dance. He is the founding partner of The PrivacyChain, a distributed data command and control system that gives creators and owners permanent control of their content. He led an IT team to Number 13 on the InfoWorld 100 and was named a Fellow by the Society of Information Management Dallas/Fort Worth chapter. He was the founding director of The Media Center at American Press Institute and taught at the graduate level at Columbia and Indiana universities, among others.

Feola was named one of the 50 most influential people in new media by Online Journalism Review. He has appeared as a new media expert on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS and Talk of the Nation on NPR, been written up in Business 2.0 and The New York Times; and addressed a joint session of the World Newspaper Congress and the World Editors Forum in Kobe, Japan. He worked at seven papers in 18 states and five countries on a couple of continents, including a two-year stint covering Asia as a foreign correspondent for Stars & Stripes. He has more than 4,000 published articles and 6,000 published photos to his credit; his photos on Google Maps have 40 million views. He has thousands of readers for his newsletters, The Best of Pentax Forums on photography, and Perfecting Equilibrium on Web3 and the Content Economy. He’s been married for four decades, with three children, two grandchildren, and rather more blessings than he deserves.

Matthew L. Jensen is the W.P. Wood Professor of Management Information Systems and a co-Director of the Center for Applied Social Research at the University of Oklahoma. Professor Jensen’s interests include computer-aided decision-making, human-computer interaction, and computer-mediated communication. He leads interdisciplinary teams investigating how people filter and evaluate information they find online. Professor Jensen has published over 100 scholarly works in leading academic and practitioner outlets. Jensen has also been the Primary Investigator or co-Primary Investigator on research projects totaling more than $9.7 million sponsored by several federal agencies and private companies.
